This is a very common question.  I suggest avoiding words, logos and characters on children's clothing.  You want the focus to be your little one, not SpongeBob.  As for families, some like to match their clothing - I prefer coordinating the overall look, but not too matchy matchy.  Think - earth tones with splashes of color.  And don't forget to accessorize.  This can be the area you add your color and pull everything together.  Scarves, belts, ties, jewelry, hats and shoes, etc.   Also for families, try to be consistent.  Be aware of the casual-ness or fanciness of the look.  Mom shouldn't be in an evening dress if Dad is in a tee and jeans. 

I also like to recommend layers - a cardigan, a vest, a sweater, a scarf can be removed halfway through your session and give your pictures a lot more variety.  Like two sessions in one! 

Really, my best piece of advice is to remember, these are YOUR pictures and you and your family should wear what you like and what you feel comfortable in.  If you are doing a themed session and need some help with wardrobe ideas - ask me.  I can always email you some examples or I may have things for you to use.
